Worked example
If today were Sunday, November 15, 2026, the UK Self Assessment deadline would fall on Sunday, January 31, 2027 — that is 77 days away, or about 11 weeks (2 months). The live counter above always uses today's real date, so your number will differ.
How this date is determined
The online Self Assessment filing and payment deadline is fixed by HMRC at midnight on 31 January every year. There is no weekend roll — if 31 January is a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline still stands, so returns are effectively due by the preceding working day in practice.
This is a statutory calendar date, so the countdown simply targets the next 31 January. Once this year's deadline passes, it automatically rolls forward to 31 January of the following year.

Frequently asked questions
When is the UK Self Assessment deadline?
The deadline to file your online Self Assessment tax return and pay the tax you owe is midnight on 31 January, covering the tax year that ended on the previous 5 April. The paper-return deadline is earlier — 31 October.
Is the Self Assessment deadline the same as the end of the tax year?
No — these are two different dates. The UK tax year ends on 5 April. The Self Assessment deadline is the 31 January that follows about ten months later, by which you must file and pay for that completed tax year. See the UK tax year end countdown for the 5 April date.
What happens if I miss the 31 January deadline?
HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty for filing late even by one day, with further daily penalties and interest on unpaid tax accruing after that. Always confirm your own position with HMRC or an accountant.
Does the deadline move if 31 January falls on a weekend?
The statutory date remains 31 January regardless of the day of the week. Because payments may take time to clear, it is safest to file and pay before the preceding Friday if 31 January lands on a weekend.
