Use this free work hours calculator to work out exactly how many hours you've worked from your start time, end time and break length. It shows your total in hours and minutes, as decimal hours for payroll, and can estimate your gross pay from an hourly rate — perfect for timesheets, freelancing and shift work.

How it works

  1. Enter your clock-in and clock-out time
  2. Add any unpaid break in minutes
  3. Get your total hours worked, in hours-and-minutes and decimal hours
  4. Optionally add an hourly rate to estimate gross pay

Decimal hours explained

Payroll is usually calculated in decimal hours rather than minutes. For example, 8 hours and 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours. This tool converts for you automatically, so you can drop the figure straight into an invoice or timesheet.

Estimating your pay

Add your hourly rate and the calculator estimates your gross pay (before tax and deductions). Hours up to 8 in a shift are paid at your standard rate, and any hours beyond 8 are automatically counted as overtime at 1.5× — shown as a separate line in the result. This is a quick estimate — your actual pay may still differ based on your employer's specific overtime rules, taxes and local employment law in your region.

Frequently asked questions

Does this subtract unpaid break time automatically?

Yes. Enter your unpaid break in minutes and it's deducted from the total before your net hours are shown.

Can I calculate work hours across midnight (overnight shifts)?

Yes. If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time, the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight and totals the hours correctly.

Can I use this for weekly or biweekly payroll totals?

It calculates one shift at a time rather than a full week. For a weekly or biweekly total, add up the results of each day's shift.

How does the pay estimate handle overtime?

When you add an hourly rate, hours up to 8 in a shift are paid at your standard rate and any hours beyond 8 are estimated at 1.5×, shown as a separate overtime line.

Does overtime differ across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ?

Yes. Statutory overtime rules vary by country and jurisdiction — for example, US federal law counts overtime after 40 hours in a week. This tool applies a simple 1.5× rate after 8 hours in a shift as an estimate, not legal or payroll advice.
